From generation to generation: Caregiver Kalani Cruz and her grandmother
Kalani Cruz, Caregiver (l) and her grandmother Francisca When Kalani Cruz’s grandmother was hospitalized
for the third time, she knew she had some soul
searching to do. Kalani, a young mother of a baby
boy, felt the bond that spans generations. Francisca,
Kalani’s grandmother, was released from the hospital
and now needed to be on oxygen with a live-in
caregiver—or receive another form of long-term
care.
For most young women, committing to a
grandmother’s care, 24/7, would be a big decision.
Kalani, who was living with her parents and younger
brother and already had the both the joy and responsibility
for caring for her young baby boy, weighed
the options.
The decision was easy for her – Kalani did not want
her grandmother to have to go to a nursing home.
Kalani, who had heard about Caregiver Homes from
her Aunt Nancy, met with Springfield, MA Program
Manager Luz Lopez. Luz helped her with the application
process for Francisca and her own credentialing
to be accepted as a caregiver.
Within a few short weeks, Francisca was able to
move into the family’s comfortable home with her
granddaughter as her full-time caregiver.
Kalani keeps her grandmother stimulated with
games and interaction with the family, prepares
her meals, and helps with personal care. Right
now, she looks forward to visits from her Caregiver
Homes Care Manager, Jackie Rivera, and
Registered Nurse, Brenda Gonzalez, and just
“takes every day at a time.”
Kalani says, “Now that she’s here, she seems a lot
happier and better. Seeing her happy, and how
she’s in a better place than she was before, is what
makes me happy.”
